Pushrim/Duo Team Athletes


The Cape Cod Marathon welcomes Push-Rim & Duo Athletes.

Push-Rim and Duo athletes are welcome to compete in the Half Marathon, Marathon, or Clam Chowdah Challenge ONLY. There are no push-rim athletes or duo teams in the 5K.

All participants in the Push-Rim and/or Duo Division receive a complimentary entry. Push-Rim and Duo participants must meet the age, participation, safety, and equipment requirements for the event they wish to take part in. All Push-Rim and/or Duo participants must be capable of completing the full race distance within the event time limit. All Push-Rim and Duo athletes MUST email info@capecodmarathon.com for more information before registering. There are no prizes awarded in the Push-Rim/Duo Team divisions. Registration for Pushrim/Duo Team athletes closes on September 1st. This allows our staff to ensure the safety and security of each athlete on the course and to prepare the ES (early start) corral.

Divisions

Assisted Wheelchair/DUO: Defined as a participant pushing a person with a permanent disability in a customized racing wheelchair. Both parties must register for the event and sign appropriate waivers. There are no cash prizes in the Duo division.

Push-Rim Racing Wheelchair: defined as a person with a significant and permanent physical or motor deficiency requiring the use of a push-rim wheelchair (not hand cranks) to compete. There are no cash prizes in the Push-Rim division

Rules

  1. The wheelchair must have two large wheels and one small wheel.
  2. No mechanical gears or levers shall be allowed that may be used to propel the chairs. Hand crank cycles or chairs are NOT permitted.
  3. Duo Teams:
    1. Both parties must register and sign waivers.
    2. One person must push the person with the disability the entire race distance within the official course time limit.
    3. The able-bodied participant must maintain contact and control of the wheelchair at all times.
    4. Only the able-bodied participant can propel the wheelchair forward; no outside assistance is permitted at any time.
      1. The rider’s time will be scored in the “Duo Team” division.
      2. The pusher’s time will be scored in their age category.
  4. To provide a safe experience for all participants there is a limit of 3 Push-Rim Athletes in any race and 3 Duo Teams in any race.
  5. The Cape Cod Marathon will provide bicycle course marshals for wheelchair athletes. No outside bicycles are allowed on the Half Marathon or Marathon course.
  6. Any athlete racing to obtain a Boston Qualifier must do so following the rules set forth by the B.A.A. Boston Marathon qualifying standards.
  7. Although Push-Rim and Duo athletes receive a complimentary entry they are required to be registered for the event they wish to race in.

Please note that the Cape Cod Marathon has the right to prevent athletes from starting and/or removing them from the course if they do not meet the standards listed in these Rules

Known Obstacles

There are no known obstacles on the marathon course.

On the half marathon course at approximately mile 9.5 all athletes must cross Worcester Court (a neighborhood green/grass park).  The route transitions off the pavement over a curb, crosses a groomed, grassy park (100 feet) and then transitions back onto pavement via another curb.
